Combined Districts Karting Club

This page has been added to make clear the expectations of the Starter at CDKC race events. The start procedure will follow the KNSW rules, the relevant rule can be found here M.2.20 Sprint Start Procedure

We aim to give all competitors a fair opportunity and also run our events efficiently. The following information (in conjunction with M.2.20) will give a guide to what we expect at the start and highlight the areas that seem to give competitors the most trouble.

After the warm up lap competitors must not change grid position between the formation line and the start line. The formation line (Red Line across the track) is located on the uphill straight between turn 7 and turn 8.

The speed the pole kart is travelling at when crossing the formation line must be maintained UNTIL THE START SIGNAL is given. This means maintain the same speed, do not accelerate to and gain speed until the start signal is given.

All other karts must remain in their correct position UNTIL THE START SIGNAL is given.

All Karts must be completely in the tram tracks UNTIL THE START SIGNAL is given.

We aim to start all races on the completion of the first formation lap. If for any reason the officials are not ready to start the race, if possible an official will signal 1 more lap.

If the race does not start on the first formation lap (other than where an official has signaled, 1 more lap), this will be because there is something wrong with the formation/approach of the competitors (the most common error is “the front row karts, accelerating before the start signal”). Please take this as a warning that their is something wrong with formation. If officials are indicating to karts to slow down, in most cases this will not mean “slow down the roll up lap speed” but will mean “do not accelerate before the start signal is given”. After this first failed attempt, we will be more likely to start the next laps and issue penalties for drivers that do not comply.

The following start penalties are “Judge of Fact” penalties and are the most common errors we see on starts. If a start penalty is issued we will try to post the “time penalty and race number” on the race control board, while the race is in progress.

  • Acceleration prior to the start signal. 10 second time penalty
  • Kart out of position (example, kart hanging back or in front of your row before the start signal). 10 second time penalty
  • Change position after formation line. 10 second time penalty
  • 2 wheels out of tram tracks. 3 second time penalty
  • 4 wheels out of tram tracks. 10 second time penalty

If you receive a start penalty and you are not sure why, we are happy to explain the rule that was broken but will not entertain further discussion on the issue.

At Lithgow we have camera’s recording all events and speed measuring zones to assist us with making correct and fair decisions. The object of all of this is to make the racing fair for all competitors.
